Fillers

Dermal fillers, also known as Facial fillers or HA fillers, can restore volume and diminish facial lines, bringing more youthful contours to the face. As we age, the fat in our faces changes. Fat pads that create softness and round cheeks begin to thin and slip downward creating deeper folds and a heavier jaw line (think jowls). Additionally, the thinner skin in our face begins to lose elasticity, causing it to sag or wrinkle. The providers at Yag-Howard Cosmetic Dermatology artfully and skillfully inject fillers to provide an immediate, non-invasive lift that allows  patients to walk out feeling refreshed and confident.

Fillers are more popular now than ever before. In 2022 Over $5.2 billion was spent on fillers, with a 29% growth expected though 2023*. At Yag-Howard Cosmetic Dermatology (YHCD), almost all our patients have had filler, or routinely receive filler injections.  Let us explain why.

BENEFITS OF FILLERS:

  • Fillers are a general term for a great variety of Hyaluronic Acid (HA) injectables, like Juvederm, Restylane, Versa and RHA.  Since our bodies already contain hyaluronic acid (joints, brain, vessels, etc.) allergic reactions are extremely rare, making HA fillers very safe. In addition to being safe, HA fillers are dissolvable. Knowing that everything is reversible can be a great comfort for patients who are new to fillers.

  • When artfully injected, fillers restore volume and shape to the ageing face. As we age, we lose bone, fat, and muscle in our face – just as we do in other areas of our body. Dermal fillers help restore the round and soft contours that we identify as attractive and youthful.

  • Results can last anywhere from 3-12 months depending on placement and filler selection. Due to their hydrophilic (water attracting) nature, HA fillers not only contour, they enhance skin quality and luminosity – factors also associated with youthfulness.

  • Sculptra, Radiesse, and Renuva are a special type of filler called "Biostimulators". Each of these three stimulate your body to create it's own "filler".  These three biostimulators cost a bit more than traditional  HA fillers, but have the benefit of lasting from 1-10 years (depending on the biostimulator used).

    • With Renuva an easy corollary is to think of "owning" your results  vs. "renting" your results with a traditional HA filler.

  • Pricing is also attractive as filler can be injected one syringe per visit for those who want to go slow, or multiple syringes can be injected at a single visit for patients wanting full correction.  (Ask about our VIP Membership program and save 20% on all cosmetic products and services - including our MedSpa.)

WHO IS A CANDIDATE?

Women and men wanting non-surgical facial rejuvenation are perfect filler candidates. Fillers have two main functions:

  1. Fill in lost volume (cheeks, temples, and under-eyes).

  2. Fill in lines and folds (between nose and mouth, corners of the mouth, between brows, etc.).

When the right filler is used in the right place by a skilled provider, the change can be extraordinary.

Filler can also be used in other areas of the body, most commonly:

  • Back of the hands – soften the appearance of prominent veins and crepey skin

  • Neck creases – sometimes called “necklace lines” – fill in creases to create a smoother neck

What to Expect

Once we have discussed your goals and desired results, we will take photos and your provider will select the appropriate filler(s).

We will clean your face and finish with an anti-bacterial wash. For comfort we prefer to apply a topical anesthetic prior to the injections, this ensures patients don’t feel the needle prick.

Depending on the number of syringes and placement of filler, injections may take between 10-20 minutes. We may apply ice to any areas that swell and dab at injection sites. You will leave with some swelling and redness and perhaps a few red pin-dots at the injection site. Within 24-48 hours swelling subsides, injections sites heal, and you can return to most, if not all, of your normal activities.

How Long Will the Filler Last?

There is no fixed rule on how long your results will last.

A general rule is 4-12months, but that depends on several things, including: the filler used, injection location, injection history, and your metabolism.  HA fillers are metabolized over time, so there will be less and less filler remaining over time.

Your provider will choose the best injectable to meet your goals, which may not be the longest lasting filler. Filler selection is based on:

  • Male or Female patient (i.e., skin thickness and facial musculature)

  • Area being injected

  • Depth of injection

  • Flexibility or movement (i.e., need for natural expression and easy filler movement)

  • Injection history

FILLERS & TOXINS – A PERFECT PAIR

Fillers alone provide wonderful results, but pairing with a neurotoxin like Botox or Dysport gives the best and most natural result.  A bit like strawberries and shortcake – both are good alone, but together they are amazing! Toxins work synergistically with fillers. They are used to target different areas and, when artfully injected, can remove forehead lines, creases between the brows, crow’s feet, and downturned corners of the mouth.
